“What’s Wrong with Selfishness?”

People scold children for being selfish, and yet they are constantly encouraged to excel, win, and “be #1”. Besides being confusing for our kids, what’s wrong with selfishness? For traditional religions selfishness is often caused by one of the deadly sins, like lust, greed, gluttony. From an Ethical Humanist perspective selfishness is bad not just because of what it does to others, but what it does to the person acting selfishly. Come hear Hugh Taft-Morales critique the self-destructive nature of selfishness.

Hugh Taft-Morales joined the Baltimore Ethical Society as its professional leader in 2010, the same year he was certified by the American Ethical Union as an Ethical Culture Leader. He also serves as Leader of the Ethical Humanist Society of Philadelphia. His presence in Ethical Culture has been termed “invigorating.” Taft-Morales lives in Takoma Park, Maryland, with his wife Maureen, a Latin American Analyst with the Congressional Research Service, with whom he has three beloved children, Sean, Maya, and Justin.
