Psychological essentialism is a well-documented cognitive tendency or mental shortcut that underlies racism, sexism, and political tribalism. It also leads to misconceptions about evolution, human nature, and other scientific issues. By learning to recognize our own essentialist thinking, however, we can resist these -isms and cultivate a more fluid and accurate comprehension of the world.
