“Poems as Self-Portraits”
BES’ Clergy Leader Hugh Taft-Morales spoke to us in April about personal identity and how we and others define ourselves. When we create a piece of art of whatever type, it shows one or more aspects of ourselves by our choice of subject and how it is presented. It may also be an explicit self-portrait, and today we will hear some poems that are self-portraits and then create our own self-portraits in our choice of poetic form. If there is enough time we will also create a self-portrait of our Ethical community by combining pieces of our individual poems into a sort of patchwork poem, containing something from each of us and synergistically becoming more than each individual simply added together.
